Outside the Box – Christy Johnson

The Level 10 Class is building on the idea that creativity is an important part of learning, and keeping math fun and interesting is a terrific way to keep young children engaged. On Friday of last week, they were busy doing just that with the help of parent volunteer, Mrs. Cobb. The students were learning how to better understand fractions and a pizza cooking activity was perfect for helping the kindergarten children understand this difficult concept. They discovered how to divide the pizza into halves, fourths and eigths. They created their own chef hat and their own pizza. They cut out paper toppings to put on their pizzas and then cut them into eight slices. Putting the pizza back together in sections, they were able to get a better grasp on how fractions work.
