As a German and French speaker, a former middle and high school language teacher, and a teacher educator at Concordia College who prepares future world language teachers, I would like to address the general attitude in our culture that devalues language learning. This attitude was highlighted in Mike McFeely’s Feb. 9 column in which he poses questions about what one would do with a French major or how the study of German, French or Scandinavian languages could possibly lead to career opportunities. This attitude is, unfortunately, pervasive in our culture, and as McFeely points out, leads parents and students to question the ultimate economic value of language study. (more)
