Bilingual speakers have more “plastic” brains than do people who speak only one language, according to two recent studies conducted by researchers at Israel’s University of Haifa. Audio-neuro researcher Hanin Karawani Khoury and her PhD student, Dana Bsharat-Maalouf, tested differences in perception and physiological reactions in about 60 young adults. Half of the subjects were monolingual Hebrew speakers and half were native Arabic speakers fluent in Hebrew as a second language.
