As I was perusing the job postings in my Sunday paper, it was clearly evident that second language skills were in high demand. And I asked myself, “Are we preparing our students with the skillset they need for the jobs of today and the future?” A recent Washington Post article titled “The surprising thing Google learned about its employees — and what it means for today’s students,” describes the skills most foundational to their employees’ success. The top characteristics of success at Google are communicating and listening well, respecting different values and points of view, having empathy toward colleagues, and being a good critical thinker and problem solver. I would argue these are all byproducts of learning a foreign language. (more)
